The new discovery could have serious implications for the use of caffeine in top sporting events, because there is currently no law restricting the use of the stimulant.

Caffeine was removed from the banned substances list set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in 2004 – meaning sportsmen and women could legally improve their performance by using extreme doses.

Muscle activity is divided into maximal, where the muscles are pushed to the limit such as in sprinting or weightlifting, and sub-maximal, which covers all other activities from turning the pages of a book to running a marathon.

The team tested the effect of caffeine on both the power output and endurance of soleus muscles – lower leg muscle – in mice, under both maximal and sub-maximal activities.

Study~author~Dr~Rob~James,~from~the~University~of~Coventry's~Department~of~Biomolecular~and~Sports~Science,~said: "A very high dosage of caffeine, most likely achieved via tablets, powder or a concentrated liquid, is feasible and might prove attractive to a number of athletes wishing to improve their athletic performance.


The researchers found that a caffeine dosage of 70 micro-Mols per litre (a measure of the concentration of a liquid) enhanced power output by around 6% during both types of activity, and the researchers say the effect is likely to be the same in humans.

Dr~James~went~on: "70 micro-Mols per litre caffeine concentration is the absolute maximum that can normally achieved in the blood plasma of a human, however concentrations of 20-50 micro-Mols per litre are not unusual in people with high caffeine intakes."

Caffeine that makes its way into the bloodstream may act at receptors on skeletal muscle, making a person temporarily more powerful, the scientists believe.

It had been previously discovered that caffeine can increase athletic performance by stimulating the central nervous system.

The researchers also found that taking in 70 micro-Mols per litre of caffeine increased endurance during sub-maximal activity, but significantly reduced endurance during maximal activity.

The scientists present their work at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Meeting in Prague on Wednesday 30th June 2010.
